How We Care for Corals at Colorful Corals

At Colorful Corals, our mission is to provide healthy, pest-free, and vibrant corals for every reef keeper. We know that corals are living animals, and how they’re handled makes all the difference. That’s why we’ve developed a careful process designed to keep each coral strong and thriving from the moment it arrives in our care to the day it’s ready for your aquarium.

Quarantine: The First Step to Healthy Reefs

Every coral we receive goes through a minimum two-week quarantine period. During this time, corals are closely monitored for pests, stress, or signs of disease. As our facility grows, we plan to extend this quarantine period even further, giving corals additional time to stabilize and ensuring even higher confidence in their health.

Dipping and Pest Prevention

Quarantined corals are dipped multiple times using a variety of reef-safe solutions. These dips help eliminate unwanted hitchhikers, pests, or parasites that can harm corals or spread to healthy systems. Our goal is to ensure that by the time a coral leaves quarantine, it is clean, healthy, and free of visible pests.

If a Pest is Ever Detected In One Of Our Main Sale Tanks, We Immediately Respond:

• All corals in that tank are dipped right away.

• The affected coral is removed and placed back into a quarantine tank for treatment.

• In the future, as we expand, we plan to introduce dedicated hospital tanks where all the corals that were in the tank with the compromised coral can be carefully treated and quarantined before rejoining our systems.

Acclimation to Tank Conditions

While in quarantine, corals are not only monitored but also acclimated to our lighting and water conditions. This step helps them adjust gradually to aquarium life, reducing stress and improving long-term health. Once a coral has proven stable and free of pests, it is moved into our main display and grow-out tanks, where it thrives until it’s ready to be shipped to its new home.

Dosing and Feeding 

Feeding Corals 

In addition to quarantine and pest management, we also focus on keeping our corals well-fed so they can thrive long-term. One of the foods we regularly use is Reef Roids, a nutrient-rich plankton blend designed specifically for corals. By target feeding with Reef Roids, we’re able to provide essential nutrition that encourages better polyp extension, faster growth, and more vibrant coloration. This feeding routine supports overall coral health and ensures that every piece leaving our systems is strong and well-conditioned for life in your reef.

Maintaining Stability With Two-Part Dosing

Strong, healthy corals depend on stable water chemistry. At Colorful Corals, we maintain this stability by dosing two-part solutions in all of our systems. These balanced additives supply the essential calcium and alkalinity that corals need to build their skeletons and grow. By carefully monitoring levels and dosing consistently, we keep our tanks within ideal reef parameters, preventing sudden swings that can stress or damage corals. This practice helps ensure that every coral we sell comes from a stable, thriving environment that mirrors the conditions of a healthy reef.
