Lighting:
Zoanthids thrive under a wide range of lighting conditions, from low to high PAR. Moderate lighting (80–150 PAR) usually brings out the best coloration without stressing the coral. Always acclimate new zoas slowly to stronger light to prevent bleaching.
Water Flow:
Moderate, indirect flow is ideal. Too much flow can cause the polyps to close up, while too little may allow detritus to settle and irritate the colony. A gentle but consistent current helps keep them clean and promotes growth.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 76–80°F
Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
pH: 8.1–8.4
Alkalinity: 8–10 dKH
Calcium: 400–450 ppm
Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
Stable, clean water is key to long-term health.
Feeding:
Zoanthids are photosynthetic but benefit from supplemental feeding. Target feeding with fine powdered coral foods (like Reef Roids) or small meaty foods (such as rotifers) a couple of times per week can increase growth and coloration.
Placement:
Start them lower in the tank and move them up as needed, depending on their response to light and flow. They grow well on rockwork and frag plugs and can form colorful mats that spread across surfaces.
Special Notes:
Zoanthids contain palytoxin, which is highly toxic if ingested or exposed to open wounds. Always handle them with gloves and eye protection.
They are generally hardy and excellent for beginner to intermediate reef keepers.
Zoanthids can grow quickly and may spread onto nearby rocks, so consider placement if you want to control their growth.
